Fireplay 101: Extra types and additions
Types of Fire play
Drumming/Bouncing
In my last writing I kind of cheated on this one and just copy/pasted from another source. Don’t worry though I gave credit! But since I did such I figured I’d do my own writing about it here.
Drumming, sometimes referred to as “bouncing” is a fairly simple act in which the top will take a lit wand and drum or bounce it on the bottoms skin. This is a more indirect form of fire play as there is no fuel being applied to the bottom. Typically the fuel used will be isopropyl alcohol and the wand will be soaked (but not enough to drip). After the wand is lit the top will gently tap it on the bottom, the back, thighs, and butt are great places for this.
To add to the effect this will also usually be done along with the beat of the music that is playing at the time. The bottom should feel quick bursts of warmth but should not feel any burning sensation.
The main dangers that come into play here are if the wand has too much fuel on it, the drumming could transfer some lit fuel to the bottom, if this occurs it should be extinguished quickly.
Fire Massage
Fire massages are one area of fire play that I rarely see anyone mention or talk about. These are akin to cupping as it has great medicinal benefits as well. This is essentially what it sounds like, incorporating fire into a massage.
With a fire massage, essential multiple areas of fire-play may be used but the two most common are fleshing and drumming. This involves either placing the fire on the skin (fleshing) and quickly extinguishing it followed by a light massage to the area, or drumming/bouncing followed by a light massage to the area. The purpose of this is that the heat promotes blood flow, while the massage helps relieve any tight areas of the muscles.
Also like fire cupping this is another area that is still used today in various areas around the world for it’s medicinal benefits. Keep in mind that the safety considerations are the same as the areas that are you are incorporating into the massage.
Fire Gloves
I was honestly hesitant to include this as it’s own separate category, but I figured this is my writing so I’ll do what I want! Fire gloves are pretty much what it sounds like. In this instance the top will wear gloves, typically made out of Kevlar or some other fire retardant material and will then apply a fuel source (isopropyl alcohol) before lighting them on fire and using them in play.
Fire gloves can be used in a manner similar to drumming, simply tapping them on the bottom or by bringing them close to the bottom’s skin. This can also be used for light spanking, however care must be taken to avoid lit fuel transfer.
Other Fun additions
Although I’ve covered many areas of fire play, I haven’t covered them all nor have I even begun to cover the other fun things you can include in a fire play scene. So I figured I’d make a separate category for fun additions. These are not necessarily types of play themselves but fun toys you can use.
Violet Wand
Ok so we all know what a violet wand is, if not, go and do a quick google search and come back. I personally love topping with a violet wand, but another thing that most don’t tend to think about is that at the right setting, and distance these things do produce sparks. These sparks are more than capable of lighting a variety of fuel source. So this is a good way to combine two types of play.
Swords/Axes/Etc
Another fun note to mention is that there are swords, axes, and other fun toys made for use with fire. Typically these are made for fire dancing, but who says we can’t have a little kinky fun with them? Item’s such as the Fire Shinai from Trick Concepts can make a great addition to a Fire Flogging scene. Using it to run up the bottom’s back, or gently tap them with could add that extra little flare.
Igniters
Igniters! Yes, igniters! There are many different types of igniters that you can use to light your fire to help free up a hand or to make it a bit more unexpected. Items such as a Right Ingiter is really nice as you’re able to wear it and strike it at any time without having to hold a lighter in your hand. I have played with one of these many years ago, and thoroughly plan on getting another to add to my kit.
Yet another type is one that can work remotely! Yes, we have remote control igniters! Ones such as the Wonder Igniter can be fun as well as they can be set up and ignited with the push of a button. When dealing with these, however, it’s important that you are always withing reach of and keeping an eye on what’s going to be ignited. Don’t trust that these won’t spontaneously ignite.
One final word. I know there are others out there that shoot “fire balls”, which are actually just flash paper, but I would avoid these. Any igniters that “shoot” carry more risks than they are worth and bringing them into a scene is just asking for disaster.
Final Thoughts
So, just like my last writing: I don’t pretend to know everything or all details. If someone experienced here has some things they would like to add I ask that you please comment it below and I’ll be happy to add it and attribute source.
