Waxplay 101
What is it?
Wax play is a form of temperature and sensation play in which melted wax is dripped onto a person’s naked skin to introduce a slight burning sensation to the skin. This is typically done from a lit candle, however can be performed in other methods as well. It is considered a moderate form of play and can cause severe burns if done wrong.
History
The start of wax play can be traced back to the ancient greeks and romans, where they would partake in a type of Thermal Medicine called Balneotherapy.
>Balneotherapy
a method of treating diseases by bathing, a traditional medicine technique usually practiced at spas
With this practice they would ritualistically take baths mixed with other substances such as oils, minerals and yes even wax to help alleviate illness and cure pains. Even today this is still practiced and been shown to have some medical benefits. The reason I bring wax play in at this point in history is that it’s some of the earliest documented times when wax was applied to the human body for some type of benefit, much in the same manner that we use it in BDSM. While it’s not the exact same, as one of the methods used is something akin to a paraffin bath. It’s still using wax.
If you want to ignore this as it’s not exactly wax play, then wax started around the 1970s around the same time most other stuff did, and came from the earlier scene where they would pour wax on each other during intimate moments….but that’s boring and doesn’t come with a lot of helpful or fun links. 😉
Safety
Wax play can be a very enjoyable experience, but it also demands attention to safety to avoid potential risks and ensure a pleasurable scene. Understanding the hazards associated with wax play is important for both the top and bottom. Here are essential safety considerations to keep in mind when indulging in wax play:
1. Candle Additives and Melting Points: Different types of candles may contain additives like dye, oils, and scents that can increase the melting point of the wax. Before beginning the session, choose candles specifically designed for wax play, made of low-temperature paraffin or soy wax without additional additives. This helps ensure a safer and more controlled temperature when the wax is dripped onto the skin. Some additives may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in certain individuals. To avoid potential adverse reactions, both partners should be aware of any allergies or skin sensitivities they may have. Conducting a patch test on a small area of skin before proceeding with larger-scale wax play can help identify and mitigate any adverse reactions. I have done a full write up on wax types and types that you can read for additional information.
2. Fire Prevention Precautions: Candles used in wax play can pose a fire hazard, especially when close to flammable items. Prioritize fire prevention by conducting the session in a controlled environment away from materials that can easily catch fire. Keep a fire extinguisher or a bowl of water close by to handle potential accidents swiftly and effectively. Never leave a lit candle unattended during play and be cautious about dripping wax too close to furniture or items that may catch fire. To minimize the risk of accidental fires, always use candles in stable holders that won’t tip over easily.
3. Risk of Splattering and Burns: Wax that is too hot can cause severe burns and may also splatter, posing a risk to the eyes and sensitive areas. Always test the temperature of the wax on a less sensitive part of the body before proceeding, and maintain a safe distance between the candle flame and the skin to control the impact of the wax. Some individuals may have a higher tolerance for heat, while others may find even warm wax uncomfortable. Communication is essential to ensure the bottom’s comfort and safety during the session. Establishing a clear safe word or signal allows the bottom to indicate if the sensation becomes too intense or if they need a break.
4. Wax Removal Challenges: Removing wax can be a delicate process, particularly from areas with hair. Using a flea comb or specialized wax removal tools is recommended to avoid skin damage. Refrain from using knives unless you have the necessary skills to handle them safely. Before starting the session, discuss the plan for wax removal and agree on the method that both partners are comfortable with.
5. Body Positioning and Distance: When performing wax play, consider the bottom’s body positioning and choose areas with ample flesh, avoiding sensitive or bony regions. Experiment with different heights and angles to achieve desired sensations, and always be attentive to your partner’s reactions throughout the session. Maintain a safe distance between the candle flame and the body to control the temperature.
6. Skin Preparation: Prepare the skin for wax play by moisturizing and cleansing the areas where the wax will be applied. Avoid using lotions or oils immediately before the session, as they can trap heat and increase the risk of burns. Well-prepared skin is more resilient and less likely to suffer damage during wax play.
7. Emergency Preparedness: Have a plan for handling unexpected situations, such as accidental burns or excessive discomfort. Keep a first aid kit and burn treatment supplies handy. Know how to provide appropriate care for any minor injuries that may occur during play. Having a means of communication, such as a safe word or signal, allows the bottom to indicate any discomfort or the need to stop the session promptly. I also have a write-up on BDSM first aid that you should check out if you’re not sure of what to do.
By considering these safety factors and openly communicating with your partner, wax play can become a very gratifying and secure activity. Prioritize informed consent, educate yourself on proper techniques, and be prepared with the necessary safety equipment to create a pleasurable wax play experience for all participants involved.
Tools to have on hand
When engaging in wax play, it’s essential to have safety equipment readily available to handle any potential accidents or emergencies. Here’s a list of safety equipment you should have on hand:
- Fire Extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of accidental fires. Make sure it’s appropriate for handling small fires, such as Class B and C fires, which involve flammable liquids and electrical equipment.
- Bowl of Water: Have a bowl of water close by to extinguish candles or to dip fingers or body parts in case of accidental contact with hot wax.
- Burn Gel or Aloe Vera: Keep a burn gel or aloe vera gel on hand to provide immediate relief in case of minor burns. These products can cool the affected area and soothe the skin.
- First Aid Kit: Have a well-stocked first aid kit available, including bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, and other essentials to tend to minor injuries.
- Scissors: Keep a pair of scissors accessible to quickly cut away any clothing or materials that may be affected by wax during an emergency.
- Blanket or Fire-resistant Cloth: Have a fire-resistant blanket or cloth on hand to smother any small fires or to wrap around a person if necessary.
- Safe Removal Tools: Have appropriate tools for safely removing wax from the skin, such as a flea comb or specialized wax removal tools.
- Phone or Communication Device: Keep a phone or communication device nearby to call for help in case of more severe accidents or emergencies.
Remember to familiarize yourself with the proper usage of the safety equipment and take necessary precautions to prevent accidents during the wax play session. Prioritize the well-being of all participants, and be prepared to act promptly in case of any unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, always perform wax play in a controlled environment with proper ventilation and away from flammable materials to minimize risks.
How to do it?
Consider the bottom’s body positioning and choose areas with ample flesh, avoiding sensitive or bony regions. Test the temperature of the wax on a less sensitive part of the body before dripping it onto more sensitive areas to avoid accidental burns. As you begin the play, maintain a safe distance between the candle flame and the skin to control the temperature upon impact. Experiment with different heights and angles to achieve desired sensations, and always be attentive to your partner’s reactions throughout the session.
As the wax drips onto the skin, observe your partner’s responses and adjust your technique accordingly. Read their body language and listen to their verbal cues to ensure their comfort and enjoyment. Aim for a rhythmic and controlled pace when dripping wax to create a sensually immersive experience.
Use of mineral oil
For those seeking to further enhance their wax play experience, incorporating mineral oil can be a valuable technique. Mineral oil serves two primary purposes in the context of wax play: lowering the temperature of the dripping wax and easing the removal of dried wax afterward.
Before starting the wax play session, apply a thin layer of mineral oil to the areas of the body where you intend to drip the wax. The mineral oil acts as a protective barrier on the skin, providing a cooling effect when the hot wax makes contact. This helps reduce the intensity of the sensation, making the experience more comfortable and enjoyable for the bottom.
Additionally, when the wax play session concludes, the presence of mineral oil on the skin can simplify the removal process. Dried wax may adhere to the skin, especially in areas with hair. However, the application of mineral oil beforehand can make it easier to peel off the wax without causing discomfort or skin irritation. Simply use slow and gentle movements to lift the dried wax from the skin’s surface, taking care not to pull or scrape forcefully.
Remember, using mineral oil should be done with consent and consideration for any allergies or sensitivities the participants may have. Always perform a patch test before using mineral oil for the first time to ensure there are no adverse reactions.
Use of sensory deprivation
Wax play can become even more immersive and intense when combined with sensory restriction techniques. One effective method is to incorporate a blindfold to heighten the sensations experienced during the dripping of hot wax onto your partner’s skin. Sensory deprivation enhances the focus on touch and the anticipation of the unknown, intensifying the pleasure and excitement of the wax play experience.
Before beginning the session, ensure that both partners are comfortable and consenting to the use of a blindfold. Choose a blindfold that fits securely but does not cause discomfort, and make sure it can be easily removed if needed.
When the bottom wears the blindfold, their sense of sight is taken away, leaving them more receptive to other sensory inputs. With the anticipation heightened, each drop of hot wax landing on their skin becomes an electrifying surprise, intensifying the sensation. The blindfold not only enhances the physical aspect of the experience but also creates a sense of vulnerability and trust.
As the top, communicating with the blindfolded bottom becomes even more crucial. Use verbal cues or gentle touches to reassure them and ensure their comfort throughout the session.
Wax Removal
After a wax play session comes the crucial step of removing the dried wax from the skin. Proper wax removal is essential to prevent discomfort, irritation, or skin damage. There are several techniques for wax removal, each with its own considerations and levels of safety:
- Using Safe Removal Tools: Specialized wax removal tools, such as a flea comb, wooden knives, or plastic cards, are designed explicitly for this purpose. A flea comb features fine teeth that can gently lift the wax from the skin’s surface without causing harm. Wooden knives and plastic cards with smooth edges can also be used to safely scrape off dried wax. These tools help minimize the risk of injury and are suitable for individuals without specialized skills in using sharp objects.
- Claws or Fingernails: If the top has trimmed and smooth fingernails, they can use their fingers or claws to remove the dried wax. Caution should be exercised to avoid applying excessive force, as this may lead to skin abrasions or scratches.
- Mineral Oil or Coconut Oil: Before attempting wax removal, applying mineral oil or coconut oil to the wax-covered skin can help soften the wax, making it easier to remove. Gently massage the oil into the affected areas and let it sit for a few minutes before attempting removal.
- Ice Pack: Placing an ice pack on the dried wax for a short time can cause the wax to contract and become easier to remove. However, avoid using ice directly on the skin to prevent frostbite, and limit the duration of ice application.
- Warm Compress: A warm compress can also aid in wax removal. Applying a warm, damp cloth to the wax for a few minutes can help soften it and make it easier to scrape off.
- Patience and Slow Removal: Regardless of the method chosen, it’s crucial to approach wax removal with patience and a gentle touch. Slowly and carefully remove the wax, avoiding quick or forceful movements that may cause skin irritation or injury.
Remember, each individual’s pain tolerance and skin sensitivity vary, so communication with the bottom is essential during the wax removal process. Pay attention to their comfort level and adjust the technique accordingly. In cases of extensive wax play or if any skin irritation occurs, consider seeking professional medical advice to ensure proper care and healing.
Aftercare
Engage in aftercare once the session is complete, offering emotional support and reassurance to the bottom. Attend to any minor burns or discomfort by cooling the affected areas with cold water and applying a soothing lotion or aloe vera gel. Debrief about the experience, discussing what was enjoyable and what could be improved upon for future sessions. Remember, the key to a good wax play experience lies in trust, communication, and responsiveness to your partner’s needs and desires.
